Make Nature Your Pantry

Its September and its Spring. Now is the time to think about whether we can grow some of our own food, and to make preparations for that. Or try growing just one edible that you love. What about edible flowers? or a few herbs for flavouring, mega nutrition and teas?

Why Bother? Here are some good reasons to have a go

  • You might not be able to grow all you need but having enough greens for most days is do-able even with just pots on a balcony, so why not have a try?
  • Your Home-grown veggies may be about 30% more nutritious and chemical free too if you want. So good for you!
  • Taste the difference- these veg will taste really delicious.
  • Getting out in the sunlight (think Vitamin D) and fresh air is great for your health, so is the exercise.
  • Connecting with nature and natural life cycles is good for your soul.
  • Any children in your life will learn where fresh food actually comes from.
  • You'll always have something to eat on hand.
  • The food you grow will be packaging free and you won't have any food waste because you'll only pick what you need.
  • You may have enough to give some away to someone you care about- a very welcome gift.
  • No carbon emissions involved in growing or harvesting this food. A big tick for climate action.

Not sure how to get started?

Come and see us at Sustainable Papakura and we'll give you some tips. We'll also give you some free spinach seeds, and you can join our seed library. While you are there, find out about how to deal with food scraps in a way that works for you, and chat to our team about all things sustainable. We look forward to seeing you.
