Conserve

To promote Zero Waste and Waste Minimisation by developing and supporting a range of activities and projects that encourage and support recycling, upcycling and waste minimisation.

empower

To inspire community spirit through local opportunities for collective activity and learning skills and to promote small business opportunities for the unemployed and unskilled.

Support

To support other local community groups in Papakura and Auckland Council's Zero Waste Policy with waste minimisation and recycling projects.

Reclaim

To suppport the establishment of a Resource Recovery Centre in Papakura which will provide a focal point for recycling and upcycling in the community.

Invest

To invest any funds generated by these activities in community led waste minimisation projects in Papakura.

Governance

The Board of Trustees

Sustainable Papakura is governed by a Trust Board comprising 4 Trust members. Membership of Sustainable Papakura is by written application to the Board. Applications will be considered at the next Board meeting and decisions notified thereafter.

Sustainable Papakura envisions a Papakura where we will all be collaborating to nurture and protect Papatūānuku in order to secure a viable future for our mokopuna.

In this vibrant, generous community, people actively avoid waste and make careful use of resources, contributing with pride to an urban landscape intertwined with lush green spaces, clean water ways, clear air and abundant food sources.

Eco-Resource Centre

People would have access to an Eco Resource Centre which both demonstrates and facilitates Sustainable Living. As a Learning Hub, this Centre promotes resilience, hope, collaboration, economic self-reliance, and a reduced carbon footprint.

An Eco-Resource Centre

Management and Delivery

A Voluntary Effort-670 Hours a Month

The Management and Delivery of Trust Projects is carried out voluntarily by the Trustees in addition to their Governance roles.  Together with our network of Sustainable Papakura Friends, we have this year recorded an average of 233 volunteer hours a month. We know that many hours also go unrecorded. It is thanks to these dedicated volunteers that Sustainable Papakura is able to deliver its services.

Sustainable Papakura enjoys the aid of many organisations which provide funding, sponsorship, encouragement and practical support as we working towards achieving the kaupapa.

Funding has enabled us to contract a sustainable living skills facilitator and a Volunteer Co-ordinator.

Such collaboration  has led to the delivery of a variety of events to different sectors of our community. We are always open to new partnerships that will embed sustainability deeper into the heart of our community. We acknowledge you all for your part in 'Contributing to a vibrant Papakura through the provision of eco-friendly waste minimisation choices'.

    Beginnings

In 2013, against the backdrop of Auckland Council's Zero Waste 2040 inititiative, local zero waster Dale Granich focused her passion for waste minimisation on forming the Rejuvenate Papakura Trust. 

Foundation Trustees were Dale Granich, Carolyn Conroy, John Robinson and Gaileen Thew. In the early days Rejuvenate Papakura established a Homemade Market, an  'Upcycled Craft' Group, and a Children's Market managed by a Working Group. The 'Inspired Clothing' label was created and community collaboration birthed the Christmas Pop-up shop, still popular today.

A  Steering Group engaged in community consultation which garnered support for the establishment of a Resource Recovery Centre. Today this project is partly fulfilled by the current Base while we await Auckland Council resolution of the location of additional resource recovery centres.

Consolidating

Renamed Sustainable Papakura in 2016,  a Logo was designed, and the Trust Deed updated, paving the way for new initiatives. Chairperson Carolyn Conroy and Auckland Council's WasteWise Advisor Haley Lowe supported this phase of development.

 Growth

In April 2018, The Corner Creative Space in O'Shannessey St, Papakura generously offered  the Trust use of a part of their new premises. This gave us a home for the Awhio Mai Peke-Borrow and Return Bag Project and for our equipment.

In 2019, outgrowing this space, we moved to 4/2 Averill St, Papakura courtesy of the efforts of Town Centre Manager Tracy Shackleton, and a very generous landlord. There we created a busy and purposeful community hub for sustainability coming another step closer to our dream of a dedicated Eco-Resource Centre.

As of June 2022, we are now open at our new Base at 47 O'Shannessey St, Papakura.
